How can modeling agents advance my career?

By Jennifer Riordon

In today's world it would be next to impossible to break into the world of modeling without a modeling agent. But you first need to know what services they provide and how to select a good one.

Modeling agents have been around for many years, and lots of models as well as consumers have their own take on what a modeling agent really is. In this day and age, modeling agents themselves are almost impossible to find because most of these services are provided by modeling agencies who are made up of more than just one person.

However, a model may easily find a modeling agent within an agency to market and manage their careers. A lot of times, a modeling agent is looked at as more of a sales position instead of someone who will actually help to further a particular model’s career. If someone has the money to pay an agent to represent them, they will probably be picked up.

Of course determining whether an agent will offer you a valuable service in regard to finding you work as a model, will all depend on how the modeling agents make their money.

For example, modeling agents who make only commission from the jobs you do get as a model are more likely to actively seek work for you as opposed to modeling agents who make an up-front profit from your payments to them. If the agent makes money only from what you pay them, they really have no motivation to find you the work you want to pursue.

Many young men and women become infatuated with the idea of being a model and will do whatever it takes to bring that dream to reality. They feel that an initial investment with the agent is needed to further their career. This is simply not the case.

Modeling Scams - You have to be careful. Here is some information that will tell you some things to look out for.

A big question many aspiring models have is where to find the best modeling agents and where the most work can be found. Big cities are the best place to find these things, and the number one city to find modeling agents and modeling work is New York. If the aspiring model hails from a small city their avenues to find work might be very restricted.

If you don’t live in a big city but dream of being a model, it is probably a good idea to make a trip to a big city like New York and visiting some modeling agents to see if they want to offer some kind of contract before actually moving there.

Although modeling is big business in these large cities it doesn’t mean it is easy to find other work if a modeling career does not take off right away or work out at all. Keeping worse case scenarios in mind, when thinking about moving for any career, is a smart move and can save many bad mistakes, time, and money.
